Tomorrow’s Restaurant Experience Today!

M2K, Inc. plans interactive, intergalactic dining experiences created by proprietary holographic and computer generated imagery that waits on and entertains patrons at unique Spaceship M2K Restaurants

by Janet Heller and Keith Alan Deutsch

The M2K concept was created in 1997  by Ed Curry, Joe Spinelli, and Bill Wilson.  Mr. Curry and Mr. Wilson designed the technology.  According to M2K, Inc.’s confidential prospectus, this new proprietary technology uses computers to generate programmable holographic environments.  E.S.P. Magazine, which  has been granted exclusive permission to make a limited disclosure about the M2K project,
has been told that the holographic images are interactive and will be
able to converse and take food and beverage orders from the “space traveling” customers.

If the new holographic system works as described in the prospectus, the M2K technology would have significant implications for the entire entertainment retail real estate industry.  M2K, Inc. is reserving the use of the new technology exclusively for the M2K concept in the restaurant industry.  But the interactive- environment machinery has obvious applications outside this limited field.

For example, Sony Imax is currently in discussion with the emerging Baywatch Cafe chain to develop a programmable video wall of changing beach environments.  Ron Jon Surf Shops and Macy’s are currently using different video image technologies to add excitement to their retail environments and for corporate training purposes.  Iwerks is also developing image-
generating technologies to enhance
retail environments.  Disney and Universal Studios have developed elaborate and bulky image and environment-producing strategies for their theme park attractions.   Paramount has produced a multi-million-dollar space-travel environment for its Star Trek bar and cafe.  But none of these executions appear to have the cost-effectiveness and the interactive flexibility of the holographic system described in M2K’s prospectus.

For the M2K Spaceship concept, the strategy is to maintain a central identity
for the project as  an intergalactic travel dining experience.  The flexibility of the technology permits M2K, Inc. to produce new special effects at will so that the space travel experience is constantly fresh as patrons travel to new destinations and take part in new intergalactic adventures.  Of course, the full menu of high-quality food and beverages that M2K will offer will not be computer-generated!

Spinelli, who has developed and opened more than 4,000 restaurants, originally envisioned a futuristic, turn-of-this-century restaurant employing high technology to wait on patrons and entertain them while they dine.  But the technology did not exist to make this vision a reality, so Spinelli brought together a team of experienced restaurant industry insiders with
whom he had worked during the past 25 years to discuss the feasibility of such
an operation.

The three entrepreneurs met and merged their assets of technology, restaurant development, and management to create a restaurant/entertainment complex
that they believe can cost-effectively change environments as the market demands without changing the complex’s identity.

If the new holographic system works as described in the prospectus, the M2K technology would have significant implications for the entire entertainment retail real estate industry

The team based the concept on three premises: 1) employ high-impact, leading- edge interactive technology, 2) employ a year 2000 space theme where the Spaceship M2K will tour the universe and change themes from time to time, and 3) establish a successful restaurant/entertainment complex and system that has sole and exclusive possession of its innovated market niche.
