Compiled by Alejandro Marti

March’e Movenpick is a marketplace-style eatery that offers its customers fast, freshly prepared food of various types, ranging from Asian to Italian to American to French cuisine. It is formatted as an indoor, open-air market where patrons can either stay to eat their food or take it home with them.

Management: In 1996, the Toronto-based Richtree, which went public after it bought the North American concept rights from Movenpick of Switzerland, decided to set up Marches in various
parts of the United States. The company has several sites in Toronto that have been doing very well since 1980. This cutting-
edge, “made for you” corporate cafeteria is extremely popular in downtown business districts where there is heavy foot traffic, but it is also attractive for take-out or home food shopping purposes. The giant Movenpick format is also just one of three directions where Richtree has taken the Marche concept. There is also the Marche Take-Me grocery and prepared foods market and Marchelino, which provides a popular take-out option for those who demand quality even when their time is limited. The expansion strategy usually involves the addition of these smaller entities once a flagship Marche is set up in a region.

Location/Expansion: There are currently four Marche Movenpicks worldwide, while the newest18,000-sq.ft. site (soon to be 36,000 sq.ft.) opened recently in Boston’s Prudential Center. In all of its various forms there are 24 Marches located mostly within Canada. A site in San Diego is scheduled to be completed by late 1999, followed in early 2000 by a location in New York City. By 2001, there should be eight more in selected cities throughout the United States. The company is looking for areas where high visibility and a strong street presence are easy to attain, such as Chicago and Las Vegas.
