R-Ranch Markets
Growing in the Overlooked Ethnic Market

A textbook example of the truth in the time-proven marketing axiom, "find a need and fill it," can be seen in a Southern California supermarket chain of which most consumers have never heard. R-Ranch Markets has catered to the much overlooked and under-served ethnic trade markets since 1974, focusing its merchandise and marketing efforts on the growing Hispanic market. As its niche has grown, so has the company.rranch1.jpg (19262 bytes)

As a mark of its financial strength, R-Ranch Markets was named to the Top 50 Retailers list in the country by the Mexican American Grocers Association (MAGA). R-Ranch is an active participant in community events and celebrations, and makes a concerted effort to hire from within the communities where they locate. R-Ranch Markets made a major commitment to the inner city by acquiring and rebuilding three supermarkets that were destroyed during the Los Angeles riots.

Establishing Distribution Channels For Growth

The well-established, growing company recently aligned with the Fleming Companies, a distributor to over 3,100 supermarkets and owner of 270 supermarkets, as its distributor. Fleming, based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, will serve all R-Ranch retail stores in the Los Angeles area from its Phoenix, Arizona, division, and will also deliver products to the company’s 45,000 square foot redistribution center in Commerce, California, which services 130 additional stores in the Los Angeles market. R-Ranch Markets currently owns and operates five high-volume, full service supermarkets and one "Cash and Carry" unit.

The long-term goal of becoming a major force in the ethnic supermarket business world depends on finding outstanding real estate opportunities. R-Ranch Markets Corporation is well positioned to take advantage of a variety of real estate transactions including land purchases, build-to-suit leaseholds, purchasing existing buildings and leasing and retrofitting existing buildings. Current locations are both freestanding and "in-line" within shopping centers. R-Ranch Markets can serve as an anchor tenant, with customer counts for a typical store averaging 25,000 per week.rranch2.jpg (23930 bytes)

Full Service with a Specialty Product Focus

R-Ranch Markets stores include a meat department, produce department, tortilla factory, hot deli, frozen foods department, full service bakery, ATM, check cashing, and liquor department. Many of the specialty products that are stocked cannot be found at other grocery stores.

R-Ranch Markets Corp. is actively looking for locations in high density, moderate- to low-income, Hispanic and/or African American communities within Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino. Size ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet with parking for a minimum of 80 cars. The company will consider spaces of 12,000 to 14,000 square feet for its Junior R-Ranch Market concept now in development.
