Home Furnishing E-tailers

Home furnishings is a hard goods retail category that industry experts once predicted wouldn’t be a good candidate for anything but in-store shopping, guessing that consumers would want personal visual and tactile assurance before making a purchase. Those mavins were proven mistaken by highly successful catalogers including Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn. Making the quantum leap to the modern market, today’s home goods consumers are e-buying everything from furniture to decorative accessories and cookware, to the tune of about $600 million in expected 2000 sales. Home furnishings retailers have responded by rocketing into e-commerce, with operations ranging from online superstores that would probably be the size of the mothership if they were anything but virtual, to small, one-of-a-kind artisan pods. A targeted search for “home furnishings” on an Internet browser will turn up nearly 24,000 Web pages. Here are a few e-tailers that are furnishing inner space through cyber space.
