MELT looks to soak up the smell of success

by Rich Timlen

Finally, customers can purchase products that ARE supposed to melt in their hands.

With handmade soaps, bath salts, body scrubs, lotions and numerous other natural skincare products, MELT stores offer customers an array of products in which to pamper themselves. But, unlike many other stores that sell bath products, MELT offers a unique way of shopping for items. The company bills itself as a “skin care delicatessen,” in which customers can buy soaps by the slice and where many items are wrapped up like deli products, featuring the weight and price. The stores also offer bins of bath salts and allow customers to wrap up their items in what looks like Chinese take-out containers. Prices range from $11 for an eight ounce bottle of lotion to $55 for gift sets.

The company makes 80% of its soaps in-house and specializes in oils that absorb into the skin quickly. Along with their numerous products, the stores feature televisions and bathtubs and allow customers to mix and match different scents. Also offered in the store are powders, foot care products, gift sets, products for the face, lips and hair and fizzy bath balls that look like scoops of ice cream. The company’s motto is: Keep it simple.  Keep it desirable.  Keep every product emotional and essential. And, above all else, keep it clean!

The stores utilize fresh ingredients, maximum moisturizers and various scents, and each MELT creation is crafted by hand. The company currently operates three locations in malls throughout CO. The stores are located at Cherry Creek Shopping Center on East First Avenue in Denver; at Flatiron Crossing located on West Flatiron Circle in Broomfield and at Southwest Plaza located on West Bowles Avenue in Littleton. MELT cites its main competition as L’Occitane.

The company is planning to expand during the coming 18 months, with 10 locations opening throughout CO, IL, NV and TX. Typical leases run five years with five-year options. The company is franchising. The stores typically occupy spaces of 1,000 sq.ft.

MELT opened its first store in October 2001. A second store was added in 2002, and in 2003 MELT opened a warehouse and started a home party division. Just last year, the company opened its third location and begin franchising the concept. The company began distributing circulars offering franchise opportunities to interested parties in February. The company was founded by Stephen McNally, James Saylor and Thomas G. Smith. All three are owners, along with Cheryl Webster.
