Stoutenborough Plans
Santa Ana Renovation
Stoutenborough, Inc., Architects and Planners, a mixed-use design specialist, completed a redevelopment study for the City of Santa Ana, California. The study, commissioned by the City of Santa Ana, is geared toward creating an architectural theme to enhance the look and visual unity of the south main corridor of the downtown business area.
Focused on one of the citys principal thoroughfares, the study examines each property along the 800 block of South Main Street for potential low-cost facade and site upgrades. Stoutenborough used the focus block as a sample model.
A particular challenge, says Daniel P. Gehman, AIA, project manage,. was finding ways to allow an exuberant expression of the new businesses in the neighborhood while honoring the overall urban design goals of the city. We feel that weve accomplished both these goals within our study.
The study proposes simple, affordable image enhancements for each storefront, unified throughout the block by a suggested new neighborhood color scheme and a systematic approach to building signage. To promote the redevelopment program, the City of Santa Ana is reinstating its Facade Improvement Rebate Program, through which the city will reimburse property owners for up to half the cost of qualifying upgrades.
The results of the Stoutenborough study will be published by the city in a booklet to be distributed to area businesses by the recently organized South Main Street Merchants Association. The booklet is expected to serve as an inspiration and creative starting point for designers and owners of the individual properties.
