Indigo Palms Denim Company opens first store in Newport

by Rich Timlen

What better place to find Indigo Palms than on Fashion Island.
Tommy Bahama’s Indigo Palms Denim Co. opened its first store at the upscale Fashion Island Shopping Center located in Newport Beach, CA. The 2,000 sq.ft. concept shop carries the complete Indigo Palms collection of casual denim and sportswear for men. Along with the denim collection, the store will feature Island Soft, a casual sportswear collection for men which features trousers, shorts, shirts and jackets in a variety of fabrics, including cashmere, silk, linen and suede.
The Indigo Palms Denim Co. concept, which typically occupies spaces from 2,000 sq.ft. to 2,500 sq.ft., is planning to open four locations next year. Openings are slated for the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and Northwest or Rocky Mountain regions. Should those stores succeed, the company is planning a national rollout and 12 to 15 openings during 2005.
The design of the Indigo Palms store mirrors the brand’s casual lifestyle theme. The store is fitted with blue awnings and white plantation shutters for a Bahamas or Bermuda-like feel. Inside the store, blue denim and related sportswear is situated to play off the interior’s bright cream color. Also, the store is designed with mahogany trim and detailing, large black and white photography and custom rugs.
The company chose the Fashion Island Shopping Center because of its design and mix of retail stores and restaurants. The outdoor mall features fountains, tiled walkways, palm trees and large 15,000 sq.ft. koi ponds. Fashion Island is located between Los Angeles and San Diego. The mall also has a custom-made, Venetian-themed carousel with 32 antique horses and menagerie animals, as well as a Kiddie Train. Also nearby in the Corona del Mar Plaza, a Tommy Bahama restaurant and retail compound that offers Caribbean-inspired food and drinks along with a store featuring Tommy Bahama men’s and women’s sportswear, accessories, footwear and home accessories.
Tommy Bahama is a division of Viewpoint International, a subsidiary of Oxford Industries, Inc. The company was established in August 1992 and has corporate headquarters in New York, NY and Seattle, WA. The company currently operates 35 Tommy Bahama locations nationwide, seven of which are restaurant/retail compounds. Additional stores are slated to open this year.
Tommy Bahama fashions are currently available at retailers nationwide, including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, as well as high-profile resort locations around the world. Tommy Bahama stores typically occupy spaces of 3,500 sq.ft. to 4,500 sq.ft. and are located primarily in the Sunbelt region of the U.S. However, the company is now expanding into areas with colder climates. Tommy Bahama is slated to open 10 stores each during 2004 and 2005 nationwide.
